How it Happened

Ruth and Rick Bailey started doing intense therapy with their son, Mason, beginning at the age of 3. They traveled to Miami Florida to experiment with this therapy to see if it would be beneficial for their son. In three short weeks, Mason had left his kaye walker and was walking with quad canes. The Baileys have done intense therapy with their son ever since. The problem was that this therapy was not done locally. After introducing this innovative therapy to other local families, Ruth and Elyn Buscani decided it was time to bring the therapy to the tristate area. Teaming up with Anderson Park District, there was not a better location or support. It was meant to happen!

Ruth Grant-Bailey is mother of Mason. Mason is a surviving a twin that was diagnosed with Peri-ventricular Leukomalacia, Spastic Diplegia Cerebral Palsy. Ruth is also a registered nurse who currently works as a Case Manager coordinating care and helping patients with discharge planning. Ruth and Rick have sought traditional and non-traditional therapies for Mason in St Louis, Miami, Cincinnati, and suburban Detroit, as well as New Jersey.

Ruth's accomplishments include:

  • Ruth was recognized by Nabisco as being one of America's 100 extraordinary women this past summer.
  • Demonstrating the results of intense therapy utlizing the Therasuit™ and encouraging Cinti Children's Hospital management to make this relatively new therapy available at their facility. As a result of the Baileys' efforts, Children's Hospital is studying this therapy.
  • Creating Smiles for Kids through Suit Therapy, a non-profit foundation, and with the help of 3 other families fundraising to donate the equipment needed for Children's to do the research study.
  • Writing and publishing a children's book "Why Do I Walk with Canes, You Ask?" about a child's personal experience with special needs.
  • Public speaking and workshops for adults and children to raise awareness and tolerance with children with special needs.
